European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
