Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.
The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the ability to contest certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
